Implantation bleeding causes, symptom and treatments: is common in first few weeks of pregnancy coinciding with the time of your next menstural period. It shows implanation of the fertilized egg in the wall of uterus. It is one of the early symptoms of pregnancy.
What is implantation bleeding?
Implantation bleeding refers small amount of bleeding or spotting and is due to the attachment of fertilized egg in the lining of the uterine wall.For the start of a pregnancy, successful implantation is very important. The timing of implantation depends on the day of fertilization, commonly occuring 10-14 days after conception.
This type of light spotting is an early sign of pregnancy and there is nothing to worry about. But if pregnancy test is positive and
the bleeding is heavy with abdominal cramps with or without fever or vomitting, immediately consult your doctor.
How to recognize implantation bleeding?
Implantation bleeding is a light spotting occurring about 10-14 days after ovulation. The timing of this bleeding may coincide with your next expected periods. But there are some indicators with which you can differentiate between implantation bleeding and normal periods.
- Blood is pink in colour mixed with cervical mucus or brownish.
- Flow of blood is very light like a spotting.
- There may be no cramping as in the case of menstural cycle.
- There are no blood clots or any tissue as in the case of periods.
The diagnosis of implantation bleeding becomes more certain when other signs and symptoms of early pregnancy are also experienced by you.These are:
1.Vomitting / morning sickness
2. Breast heaviness and tenderness
3. Fatigue
4. Mood swings
5. Increased frequency of urine
6. Bloating
7. Constipation
To confirm whether there is pregnancy or these are periods, do a pregnancy test.

How long does implantation bleeding last?
It may occur for few hours to 2 days and stops by itself. No treatment is required for this but if there are any associated symptoms like fever, abdominal cramps, heavy bleeding,unusual vaginal discharge,consult your doctor.
Other causes of bleeding in early pregnancy
Bleeding in early pregnancy may be caused by many reasons and it may be harmful also.
Some of the causes are listed below:
- Fibroids and polyps
2. Ectopic pregnancy
3. Miscarriage
4. STD like trichomoniasis
5. Infection or growth on cervix
