How much vaginal bleeding is normal in early pregnancy?

Bleeding in early pregnancy

Bleeding during early pregnancy may be light. It may be like spotting, pink in color. It may not be associated with any other symptom like abdominal cramps or pain. This type of bleeding is usually normal in pregnancy and it may be due to implantation bleeding.

Implantation bleeding is mild spotting that happens when the fertilized egg burrows into the uterine endometrium to get itself attached. It is typically a small amount of light spotting and occurs about 10-14 days after conception. So the time is usually when a woman is expecting her next period.

So there may be period like bleeding in early preganancy at the same time when the next periods are expected.

But even then you should consult your gynecologist if you notice even a small amount of bleeding .Your doctor will advise ultrasound and /or start some hormonal support for your pregnancy after doing clinical examination

The alarming signs when you should worry about your bleeding are as follows:-

Causes of bleeding in early pregnancy

Bleeding in early pregnancy may be light or it may be heavy bleeding with clots and abdominal pain. This may point to some serious condition. The causes may be:-

1.Implantation bleeding

It’s a light spotting occurring usually 10-14 days after your conception .It is pink or dark brown and occurs for a few hours.

2.Sub chorionic hemorrhage

When the placenta slightly detaches itself from the wall of the uterus a hematoma or you can say a blood clot forms behind that placenta. The size of it may vary from a very small size to a big one. When it occurs there may be fresh bleeding with pain in the abdomen. The bleeding will eventually become dark brown as the size of this hematoma decreases.

3.Infection

Sometimes bleeding in early pregnancy may be due to a non pregnant cause. Vaginal yeast infection or urinary tract infection may also cause slight pink coloured spotting. There may be other symptoms associated with this like:- itching, lower abdominal pain, burning micturition, vaginal curdy white discharge.

4.Molar pregnancy

In a healthy pregnancy, the placenta grows inside the uterus to provide nutrition to the growing baby via the umbilical cord. But in molar pregnancy, there is no placenta but an abnormal mass of tissue due to a defect in the genetic rearrangement. The symptoms of molar pregnancy are vaginal bleeding usually watery brown, the passage of grape-like vesicles through the vagina, abdominal pain, excessive nausea, and vomiting.

5.Ectopic pregnancy

In this the fertilized egg grows outside uterus. It may be in ovaries, fallopian tube, cervix, intra abdominal organs. The symptoms may be severe pain in abdomen, dizziness or fainting attack, light to heavy vaginal bleeding or spotting.

6.Cervical polyp

It may be present in 2-5 % of pregnant females. In pregnancy due to increase in hormonal levels, the poly becomes vascular. It may get inflammed and irritated and cause slight vaginal bleeding. It is usually not associated with any symptom.
